favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.
And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.
And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.
And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her. “

There are hundreds of miraculous Marian images throughout the world known as “Black Madonnas”. The seated mother, holding a child may be traced back to the early Egyptian statues of Isis holding her son,
Horus, while the origins of the dark skinned virgin is unknown. In Aramaic, black means “sorrowful”, which is also suggestive of Isis who was called “sorrowing” in her search for her husband,
Osiris.
This particular representation was influenced by “Our Lady of Czestochowa”, in Poland, who is thought responsible for many miracles.

The “Madonna of Humility” refers to a representation of the Virgin that appeared in the 14th century depicting her dual role of both Earthly Mother and Queen of Heaven. She is seated on the ground, affectionately holding her child,, not unlike Quan Yin, an image of ultimate compassion.
She also personifies the apocalyptic woman from the twelfth chapter of Revelations. She wears a crown of twelve stars indicating her role as Queen of Heaven and the crescent at her foot symbolizes the moon on which the Virgin stands in representations of the Immaculate Conception.

Here Eve is shown in contrast to Mary’s purity. St. Jerome wrote “Death came through Eve, but life has come through
Mary” and St. Bernard explains to Dante that “The wound which Mary closed and anointed, that one who is so beautiful at her feet is she who opened and pierced it. This new iconography juxtaposes the two women in order to emphasize their roles in the Fall and salvation.
